Fractions are used to represent a part of a whole. There are numerous life situations in which one does not need to calculate whole numbers, but only a part of those numbers.
Fractions are used in many areas such as business, plumbing, carpentry, engineering, auto mechanics, cooking, and in many other areas of human life.
In Mathematics alone, fractions are used in percent, ratio, proportion, probability, measurement, geometry, perimeter, area, volume, circumference, algebra, calculus, and in many other areas of Mathematics.
One can add and subtract fractions. One can also multiply and divide fractions. In addition, fractions can be converted to decimals and percents.
Suffice it to say that without a mastery of fractions, a student would experience difficulty with many other areas of math. This is why fractions are introduced so early in elementary school.
